I have been conducting research at the University of California's Quail Ridge Natural Reserve since 1999. Quail Ridge is located in Napa County, California. It contains a mix of grassland, oak woodland and chaparral habitat, with several small riparian areas. As a relatively young reserve, Quail Ridge does not yet have many researchers conducting full time research within its borders. However, that is likely to change as people become more aware of the opportunities on the reserve.
The Quail ridge reserve contains a diverse flora and fauna. Many mammals, such as mule deer and black tailed jackrabbits are common on the reserve. More rarely, bobcats, coyotes, fox, and mountain lions are observed on the reserve. We have documented three frog species, four salamander species, three lizard species, one turtle species, and ten snake species. These are listed at my Quail Ridge Herps page. Biologists in UC Davis' Wildlife Fish and Conservation Biology Department are collecting data on bird distributions on the reserve. A montly blacklight census of moths has been conducted on the reserve for over ten years.
